Soil Health Cards Scheme(SHC) for Indian farmers
The NDA Govt. had started a soil card scheme in Feb. 2015 which is aimed to brief the health or the quality of soil to the farmers farming on them. This scheme is named as Soil Health Card (SHC) scheme. Under this scheme, the Govt. will provide health cards to the farmers which will elaborate them the harvest quality of the soil of their land. By studying the report of the soil quality of the land, the farmers may take necessary steps for farming to obtain better yield. The Govt. officials from the Agricultural Ministry will study the soil quality of the land and a printed report will be given to the farm / land owner.
Components of the Soil Health Cards (SHC)
The SHCs will have detailed analysis of the quality index of the soil and a print out copy will be given to the farmers. The SHC will cover components like functional characteristics of the soil. This will describe what type or which class, the soil belongs to. This will tell whether the soil is of sandy type, or clay or loamy. This report will also explain the nutrient content of the soil. The water content and water holding capacity will also be briefed in the SHC. These components will collectively indicate the soil quality and then the farmers may decide necessary steps for higher yield.

The Ministry of Agriculture has stated that this scheme of providing SHCs will benefit more than 14 crore farmers in the country. These farmers under the scheme will get the total analysis of the soil they are cultivating on or will be used for cultivation, after every three years. Regular Monitoring by the soil experts will be done and the farmers will be guided for necessary steps to be taken to improve their soil quality to get better agricultural productions. The farmers will get recommendations on how to increase crop yield on the basis of the nature of crops they grow on their soil, by the agricultural and soil experts.
Where the soil health testing will be done?
The Central Govt. has opened up several soil testing laboratories in both state level and District level. These laboratories work under the co-operation of the central and the state Govt. These labs are equipped with the necessary equipment needed to find out the health and quality of soil samples. The soil experts also make researches on the ways to improve the quality of the soil sample. The detailed analysis is printed in the SHCs and provided to the farmers.
Soil Health Card Web Portal
The Govt. has also started an online portal to provide soil health cards to the farmers. The Web Portal for SHC is – www.soilhealth.dac.gov.in. The farmers can make registrations to this web portal and make an online account of SHC. After that they can upload details of the soil sample reports or the test results mentioned in SHCs. Then they can keep track of the soil health readings and several other features like future test results of their soil online by generating SHCs online from time to time. They can also get online advice from the agricultural experts on the nature of fertilizers and insecticides to be used. This web portal will act as a single digital database keeping track of the soil health of various regions of India and will help in bridging the gap between the farmers and the agricultural experts. The Govt. is working on launching the web portal in several regional languages.
