Kharif crops fasal name list season
‘Kharif’ is a term coming from Arabic language which means autumn. There are two types of crops grown in India as well as the neighboring countries like Bangladesh and Pakistan. These two types of crops are Rabi crop and Kharif crop. The names are given to the crops according to their time or season of cultivation of these crop types. There are specific sowing and reaping time for these crop types and this timings are to be maintained every year for good cultivation.
Season of Kharif Crop cultivation
In India, the two main crop types exist as per the monsoon period of the country. The rains play a very important role in production of Kharif crops. The time period when Kharif crops are cultivated is from July and lasts till October. This period is the time when south west monsoon is there throughout the country. Although the monsoon varies from state to state, but the Kharif season begins with the first rains in the month of July. The seeds of the Kharif crops are sown at this time. By mid October, this monsoon stays and the cultivation is being reaped during this period. After the Kharif crop season ends, the Rabi crop season starts from mid October and stays the entire winter till March.
Crops cultivated during Kharif season
In the Kharif season i.e. during the period of July to October, the crops that are cultivated in the agricultural fields are rice, millet, pulses, maize, jute, cotton, groundnut (oilseeds), soya bean etc. These crops needs abundant amount of rain or water for their growth. The time period of July – October of the year is when India receives maximum rainfall. So these crops are sown as soon as the first monsoon rains starts and the reaping process is completed before the winter starts.
Rabi crops details and its season of cultivation
The Rabi crops or the winter season crops are cultivated during the winters in India. The cultivation period is October – March. After the Kharif crops gets reaped and winter starts slowly in October end, the Rabi crops are sown. The main crops which are cultivated during the winters or the Rabi season are wheat, oats, barley, chickpeas, mustard seed, etc. These crops flourish in the winter climate and heavy rains are not favourable for their fruitful cultivation.
